In a time when energy costs are skyrocketing, the ability to generate electricity from homemade energy sources couldn’t be more needed. Although it is not always easy to do, the benefits can be drastic when it comes to lowering those dreaded electric bills.

One of the most popular and widely used methods of generating electricity from homemade energy is through the use of solar panels. Using solar energy is a method of using what is called renewable energy. Renewable energy is any energy source that regenerates itself, rather than being depleted.

Using solar panels to provide electricity and heat to your home may involve investment initially to either have someone installed them, or even make them yourselves; you will most definitely reap the benefits when it comes to lowering your utility bills. Magnetic energy is another popular source of economy option to look at!

There are many books on the subject of building your own solar panels, so learning how to do this, while labor intensive, is not out of reach. It can make a great project for your family, if you have kids, as it is something that you can definitely do together and it will teach them a valuable lesson about energy and how you can lower costs.

Another renewable energy source that is gaining popularity is wind energy. Now this source of homemade energy has a lot to do with where you live, so not everyone will find this a good means of generating electricity for your home. To use this homemade energy source, you will need to have small turbines set up which are usually sufficient in running a home, small farm or ranch. The wind spins the propellers, which are connected to an electric generator. When the wind blows and spins the blades, they rotate around a hub which spins the generator. Some common drawbacks to using wind energy is that is can be noisy, there may not be enough wind during certain times to spin the turbines, and it can be hazardous to birds who fly into the blades.

The good news is that now, since wind energy is becoming more popular and doesn’t require fuel or release greenhouse gases, there are new options coming available that make installing a residential wind unit easier and less intrusive. It can be installed on the roof or on the home’s lot easily and without the issues previous wind energy sources have had.

Another lesser known home energy source is called Micro CHP. This source combines heat and power systems from a single source, taking every bit of energy efficiency possible out of it. For years larger industries have used this method, but its name Micro CHP has to do with the downsizing of the systems to fit residential uses. In a home that uses the micro CHP technology, a fuel source, such as natural gas is used to generate electricity and then the home is heated through the excess heat generated from powering the home. In some cases it’s enough to heat water for the home as well. The efficiency of this method can be as high as 90%.
